Common exception words for kids

Our Triple Tricky Words Bundle features all three packs from our Tricky Words range. These 3 packs are for Reception & Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 & 4. Tricky words, also known as ‘Common Exception Words’, ‘Red Words’ or ‘Sight Words’, are those words that have spellings that do not follow the recognised phonetic spelling rules!

Many of these Tricky Words are frequently used in day-to-day life, so it’s essential for children to learn these in order to become fluent readers. The words found within each of the pack are those taught in schools and follow the National Curriculum.

The Tricky Word (Reception & Year 1) pack is split into 3 groups, the Tricky Word (Year 2) pack is split into 4 groups and our Tricky Words (Year 3 & 4) are split into 6 manageable groups. Each card belongs to one of these groups, indicated with a corresponding number of red dots. As with all learning, repetition is key whilst helping to make learning fun, so we include activities within each pack that are designed to help children enjoy practising!
